Picking the Right Office Chair - Things to Look For
Your office chair is one of the most important investments you will make if you sit at a desk for any amount of time at all. Any time you are considering an investment like this you should be sure and do enough research on the product making sure that you not only get the best chair to suite your needs, but also get it at the best price.
With literally thousands of office chairs to choose from on the market today, it can be very difficult to select the one that is right for you. As a software engineer, I spend several hours per day sitting in my office chair so, as you can imagine, comfort is a must for me. I have listed a few things I have discovered are vital in selecting a chair if you sit for hours at a time.
The chair must be able to accommodate your height
While most chairs on the market today are adjustable (have the ability to move up and down), that may not be enough depending on your height. The chair must be able to raise, or lower, to a position where you can sit comfortably in the chair with your feet resting flat on the ground. The ergonomic folks add that your feet should rest on the ground with your legs at a 90 degree angle. Unless you are over or under the average height, this will most likely not be an issue as long at the chair has the ability to adjust.
Seat Adjustments
If you have researched much at all, you will notice that everyone talks about the seat back adjustment. While I am not discarding this feature, it is almost a given with most higher end chairs the seat back will adjust in several different ways. The thing I suggest paying attention to is the arm rest and making sure they adjust. Many chairs do not have arm rest that will adjust up and down, but are rather stationary. This presents a huge comfort problem if they are not at the correct position for your height
Chair Material
Everyone has their own opinion about what material is the best. I personally do not pay any more attention to the material other than making sure it is good quality. One reason this does not play a huge role on my office chair selection is due to the fact I put my office chair cushion in almost every chair I purchase. My preference is a chair that has a mesh type back to avoid my back from sweating, but that is just a preference and doesn't make any difference in comfort.
